Tao of Horsemanship

An Intuitive, Heart-felt and Clear Approach to Horsemanship
Our Taoist method of training horses and humans focuses on creating a “way” or “path” for individuals to learn easily, naturally and in harmony. Being in harmony within oneself often calls us to embrace the relationship of nature, humanity and the cosmos (energy). This is not always an easy path to follow and that is where our Taoist way of working with you and your horse can assist.

This way is not a religion as much as it is a way of living, a preferred lifestyle that asks each of us to live mindfully, with compassion and in cooperation with nature. With horsemanship, this path allows us to choose “action through inaction (wu wei),” or as I like to practice, the path of least resistance.

Through awareness, clarity of mind and mind/body congruence, we are able to meet ourselves, and our horses - offering leadership, continued oneness and consensual partnership.

When we can meet our horse’s emotional needs - understanding their spirit and what motivates them as individuals and as a species, we will not only acquire their trust, we will access their true will to give and partner.

Rider Horsemanship’s approach to teaching horses and humans focuses on creating a space where trust (connection), communication and partnership form – in mind, body and soul. Our approach is one that seeks mindfulness – a way of being with horses that asks us to be conscious of our intent and actions, and always present. It is when we are present, in the now, that all possibilities arise – that all “ten thousand things” become possible.
Rider Horsemanship employs the philosophies, training techniques, and riding elements of classical dressage. Balance, harmony, suppleness, rhythm, combined with clear, mindful and consistent communication (through aids) becomes the dialogue between horse and rider. These methods, and goals, of classical horsemanship are timeless and applicable to any horse, breed, age and rider's choice of discipline.

The key concepts of Rider Horsemanship's Approach lies in the development of communication, confidence, balance, and harmony between horse and rider. The development of communication is foremost as it establishes a mutual understanding and cooperation between both. This cooperation allows both rider and horse to work confidently together in balance, which in turn promotes harmony. Rider Horsemanship focuses on finesse, not force, and the results are achieved more smoothly and easily than most riders could possibly imagine.

Our approach works for any rider, and any horse, and is never applied with intention to force or make a horse comply. Rather, it is to improve the mind, body and soul connection between any rider, and their horse, no matter what their preference is: western pleasure, english pleasure, eventing, hunter/jumper, reining, cutting, endurance riding, competitive trail riding or pleasure riding.
