Crimson Acres Farm and Rescue

Christiansburg, VA

Here at Crimson Acres our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome horses. We often rescue horses in poor health and with little training history and nurture them until they become the healthy horses they were meant to be. We are always getting new horses in, so be sure to come back and check us out. We also specialize in ground training and colt starting.

Training
I can start your colt or filly right using natural horsemanship and humane training methods, providing your horse with a solid foundation for success.

At the end of 30 days most colts will be able to: walk, trot, canter, pick up correct leads, stop, back, yield their hindquarters and complete trail obstacles. They will be able to cross creeks and tarps, drag brush and logs, and ride out alone and in groups.

The first 30 days of riding lay the foundation for the horse's entire riding career. We work hard at making that foundation solid and positive by teaching horses to search for the right response and to think.

The first 1 to 3 rides are done in a 60 foot round pen designed for your horses safety. They start with groundwork that prepares the horse mentally and physically for being ridden under saddle.

Rides 3 to 5 are usually done in the arena. Here we work out the fundamentals of walking, trotting, loping, stopping and backing. Once this is established the horse leaves the arena and goes to work.

The remaining time is split between the arena and applying the horse's skills and building confidence in the real world.
Trail rides include going up and down hills, negotiating uneven terrain, fallen logs, ravines, ditches, retaining walls and scary objects such as mailboxes, cows, cars, and deer.

The horses learn to think and to be confident as they use fundamental skills to work and complete tasks.

A full 30 days of colt starting is $500. They will be worked on the ground or in the saddle 6 times a week and taken excellent care of while at our facilities.

Horse refresher courses and horses with bad habits, on the ground or in the saddle, can also be addressed. Prices vary depending on the degree of danger associated with your horse and how long he will be at my facility. Refresher courses can range from 5 days or for 30 days of full training. I can also travel to your place.
