Qualities of a Good Lesson Horse
Lesson horses are used by barns and trainers to teach riders. As equestrian teachers of sorts, they have to be very forgiving and able to deal with all sorts of riders from beginners. One of the most important qualities a lesson horse can have is to be sound and injury free, so it’s important to start with a horse that has good conformation. Experienced horses that are older (10-15 years) are often used as lesson horses because they’ve often been around the block and have dealt with many riders. It can be difficult to find a good lesson horse and very few barns are willing to part with the ones they have.
