Meet "Double Wide Clyde!"
Double Wide Clyde is a Belgian mule. His mom was a Belgian mare and his dad was a little donkey. He didn't get the height, but he's double wide. He's approx 14.3h, and 16 years old.
Clyde is the most gentle thing on the planet, also probably the cutest and definitely the most laziest.
He can ride, pack, pony and drive, but he is frustratingly slow. Every time you get frustrated with him, all you have to do is look at his cute face and he will melt your heart all over again.... (read more)
On a temperament scale, 1-10 he's a negative 3. I sometimes have to check for a heartbeat.
"Whoa" is his favorite speed to travel.
Nothing upsets this mule, he is as rock solid as you get. He will pull ornery horses, mule strings, pack strings, your truck out of a ditch, etc. Nothing phases him. He will pack out a full elk or your whole camp. He will pull a wagon(I've seen pics, but I've never hooked him up.) He sort of neck reins, he's like steering an aircraft carrier. You can clip his face without even a halter on. He stands great for the farrier, trailers great, crosses water and has the best ground manners you'll find. He's super friendly, gentle, loves treats, gets along with everyone and has no vices that we've seen. He hobbles and high lines. You can put your whole family on him... you could even stand up and tap dance on his back. He'll just stand there, but to get him to move you need strong legs, a big set of spurs, and the patience of a saint. Once in awhile you can get him to trot, but normally he'll just flop his ears faster so it looks like he's going faster. It would be easier to climb Mt.Everest than to get him to lope.
We owned this mule for over a year, 2 years ago and have taken him everywhere. He does great in big groups and he will ride alone if you make him. He isn't buddy sour and will gladly chose to stop and eat than keep up with the group. He will ride double, bareback in just a halter and lead rope.
He is sound and stays fat on air.
He is safe for the beginnerist of beginners to sit on if they want a pet mule, but to get him to move it probably would take someone more advanced with strong legs and even stronger willpower. I can promise you will get a workout riding this mule! He will save you money on a gym membership...guaranteed.
