Gemma is a quiet and safe little mare. Literally anyone can get on her and she will take care of them, no spook and very sensible. She has been a great babysitter for my kids for the last 3 years and taught them a ton. While she has been primarily a small fry horse since we got her, she does have a nice lope and I have shown her and earned points in amateur pleasure and horsemanship classes.... (read more) She has 115 lifetime AQHA points and many year-end awards at the regional breed show level (see below). She was the small fry all-around at almost every regional quarter horse show we did this year and is competitive in many events. She has done Equine Trail Sports competitions (obstacle course riding) and was great. We have taken her trail riding, including an excursion out to the Black Hills where she spent a week scrambling up rocky hills and navigating unmarked trails, creeks, and boulders with a novice child rider. As you can see in the videos, she has had a variety of skill levels of youth riders, often on a bareback pad to start. If they slip or get unsteady, she will stop. She is a good citizen on the ground also--the kids can lunge her, pick her feet, load her into a trailer—I never worry about them working around her alone. She is a sweet, in-your-pocket, loves-her-cuddles kind of horse.

Downsides:
-While Gemma is super safe, I wouldn’t call her a push-button horse. If you want a horse your kid can get on and go win a pleasure class without practicing, this is not your horse. She won’t hurt them, but she isn’t a robot. She will teach them how to ride well, but they have to put in the work!
-She can be “mareish” at times and will sometimes pin her ears if other horses get too close to her “kids” (this has not been an issue with me riding her). She can be grouchy if her rider gets busy and jabs on her--not dangerous, but an unpleasant expression. You need to ride through your seat rhythm on her rather than just kicking.
Maintenance: She is 12 and has been a show horse her whole life, so she does require routine maintenance. She has some hock and navicular changes that are fairly minor (x-rays available), and needs to keep her angles correct in the front to optimize movement. No therapeutic shoeing needs.
A good home is a must! The only reason we are selling her is my daughter wants to do hunt seat events.
