Ruger is a well built thoroughbred who was never raced. He had some time as a two year old on the practice track but he didn’t make the cut, and he found himself in a neglectful situation where he became very thin and developed a lack of trust for people. His current owner rescued him a year and a half ago, and has spent that time working with him to rehab and restart him. He is just too much horse for a beginner even with a trainer and he has decided it’s time to let an experienced person looking for a project to finish to take over.... (read more)

The Good & Bad: He is in training and will continue until he finds his next partner.

He has some ground issues that have been a work in progress and are going to take continued time and dedication to work through.

He stands tied very well if you’re not doing anything with him, but he will sit back if you’re grooming or saddling him when tied.

He is hard to catch in a pasture, but stalled he does better. His overall disposition is better when stalled with routine turn out rather than full-time turn out.

He is scared of the hose. He has had countless baths and rinses after riding and working, but we still move slow when starting a bath and let him adjust.

He cannot be trimmed or shod without sedation.

Now for the good!!!

Ruger is up to date on de-worming, vaccines, dental, and is on sand clear monthly.

Under saddle he actually rides pretty well, and hasn’t bucked, reared or bolted at all, he’s just green and not polished. He knows the basics: walk, trot, lope, whoa, turn both ways, and back up. His rides have been in the round pen, arena, and on property around the barns. We haven’t taken him on any trails yet.

His owner is looking for a home that will love him and has the time and experience to finish him. He is open to offers and has spent thousands more than what he’s asking — not trying to make a profit.
