Holly is a 3 yr old (will be 4 in May) registered Missouri Foxtrotter mare. She was bred in Louisiana and shipped here as a 2 year old. I started her under saddle myself. She has been on 2 camping trips and did well both times. She is going to make someone a fantastic trail horse and both my friends said if they were looking for another horse, they would buy her.
She loads very easily in a trailer, stays in an electric fence pen on camp outs, and does not fret during camping trips (eats/drinks well).... (read more) She ponies off another horse really, really well (walk, gait, trot, canter). She will walk right through water (Just be careful she doesn't roll because she loves water). She sweats well and is good about hot weather/bugs.
Under saddle, I'm really just focusing on getting her to move forward and maintain her gait. She is lazy, especially in an arena. This is not a mare to run away with you. She likes to stop. If you say "whoa" she stops, if you say "good", she stops. We are really just working on bend, turn, maintain the gait, stop and backup. I have not worked on canter, except on the lunge. She has a big trot on her- she can trot to my other horse's canter. She can also gait or pace. She has a nice slow foxtrot. Most of my training with her is just asking for the foxtrot and encouraging her to maintain that one specific gait. Again, she is a young horse and will improve with more training.
As for trail rides, she does best in a group. She's good with traffic, tractors, and bikes. Unfortunately, my health issues are forcing this sale. As much as I would love to keep her, I think she would be better in a new home that can finish her up and turn her into that phenomenal trail horse I know she can be.
This mare has stolen a piece of my heart and I will be picky about who takes her home. No, she is not for beginners- eventually I think she could be a good lesson horse but she's still too young for that. She likes cows and often hangs out by the neighbor's cows, so she could probably work with cattle and be fine with that too.
