Thelma is a 10 year old 14.2 hand Norwegian Fjord mare. This is one of my favorite breeds and I have owned many Fjords over the years because whenever I get the opportunity to buy one I do. I have to say I am not a mare person and hardly ever buy mares but Thelma has to be one of the best Fjords I’ve owned and one of the best mares I’ve owned. She has an amazing personality, zero stubbornness, a willingness to work, a willingness to please and she is not pushy at all.... (read more) A great representation of a Fjord with a beautiful head, big kind eyes and correct confirmation. She really is a beautiful animal to top it all off. Thelma is microchipped and Canadian registered. I am currently working with the Canadian Fjord horse registry and the Canadian livestock commission to get her papers which will not and is not a problem. Thelma was only sold because her owner passed away suddenly and that’s why I didn’t get her papers because his family didn’t know where they are. I am working with Canada and paying all fees and will guarantee her papers.
Now on top of being well mannered, cute and just great to be around she also rides and drives the very best. This mare is safe, safe, safe. She is safe for the oldest adult to the smallest child both on the ground and under saddle. She is a cute mover, has a nice soft mouth, great brakes and stands like a statue. She will walk, trot and canter. Her canter is like a typical Fjord canter, takes a lot of leg and doesn’t last too long. I’m sure will some arena work and balancing she’d get the hang of it because she’s so smart, so willing and so eager to please. Her trot is super smooth and comfortable. Very easy to sit to. She’ll ride in English or western tack. Direct reins and neck reins. Backs up and stands at the mounting block. Thelma never did a whole lot of ring work. She was extensively driven and trail ridden. She has been ridden by kids quite a bit. She also lunges great and is perfect for teaching little kids on a lunge line for lunge line lessons. She does not need to be lunged for any other reason, she just knows how to lunge which makes it nice for little kids that can’t be off a lead of lunge line. This mare is a total confidence builder type and will take care of whoever is sitting on her back. She is not spooky and is not phased by much of anything at all. You can let her sit for weeks and she’ll come out every time and ride the exact same way.
This mare has seen extensive miles of trail riding. The gentleman’s grandkids did most of the riding and they’d ride her around the farm, in the pastures, down the road and in the woods. She’ll also ride bareback in a halter and lead rope with no issue at all. We have taken her all around our property and down the road. She’ll also cross water and leave the property with no issues all by herself. Not barn or buddy sour at all. She’s sure footed and totally unflappable with cars, trucks, tractors, garbage cans, dogs, deer. Her ears are always forward and she’s just happy to go with the flow and do whatever is asked. You can also ride her double.
Unfortunately we no longer have a cart or a harness but I guarantee this mare drives the VERY best. She’s been driven through town, has been in the sleigh and even pulled Santa around through the town. Very well broke to drive single and double. Safe for anyone to harness, hook and drive. Very quiet to drive just like she is for riding. An absolute dream and a lot of fun this mare is. She is open and I think would produce some outstanding foals because you cannot beat her personality. I love all Fjords but I’ll be the first to say that some are pretty ill mannered which she is not in the least.
Thelma is not mareish at all and has some of the best ground manners you could put on a horse. A very easy keeper, barefoot and 100% sound. Requires zero maintenance or supplements. She’s a very easy keeper that can live inside or out. Excellent barn and pasture manners. Gets along with all others and is not alpha mare. She can also be turned out along with no issues. If you are in the market for a Fjord, consider Thelma because you will look high and low to find another one as nice as she is. If I had more time I’d honestly keep her but she deserves lots of love and attention being such a sweet in your pocket kind of horse.
