Zeke; approx 16 yo 16.2 hand Dutch Harness Horse gelding. (NO, he is NOT registered but coming from the PA Amish and seeing what he looks like…it’s a safe assumption. An assumption nonetheless)
ANY AND ALL PICS/VIDEOS WILL BE ON MY PERSONAL OR FARM PAGE W THE HORSES NAME/ALBUM!! If it isn’t there, we haven’t done it yet. Lexi Beauchesne/Rustic River Farm - Mason Nh
Update #2; Zeke finally has a nice, working trot in the ring and is showing a lot less hesitation about cantering but we are still not pushing him.... (read more) (Cantering is a cardinal sin when a cart horse) He really is coming along nicely for a horse that isn’t in 5-6 days a week of work and currently has a rider that’s been enjoying him quite a bit.
Update; Zeke was used as an example in one of our Horsemanship/Roping clinics and had a lot of flag and rope work done w him. He did really, really well after his initial nervousness w a brand new person (and man) working w him. He tried really hard and had no issue w the flag or ropes hanging on him. He’s also done quite a bit more trail riding and still chugs right along happily, seems to enjoy being out and about! He still needs work on straight tying but has been coming along well. Ground ties or “loose” ties just fine.
Zeke came in in the beginning of summer but I quickly decided to hang onto him. Unfortunately then life hit and he sat on the back burner quite a bit. He will be selling as a project for someone willing to take the time w him SIMPLY due to the fact I would love a DHH in my life but…it will be a registered, young mare…not a gelding. The further along he comes now that he’s back into full work, the higher his “carrots” will go. This guy WANTS to please, he WANTS to do good by his handler, he WANTS to learn new things and isn’t necessarily what I’d consider a “spooky” horse. But he IS apprehensive. Rightfully so after serving the Amish as a road horse for many years and most likely not being treated the greatest along his journey. Zeke will happily go out in a halter/lead or a hackamore down the dirt roads and onto the trails w out a care in the world w or w out others. He is still very green in the ring as I don’t believe he was started long before arriving here. He WILL cow kick when he thinks he’s doing something wrong or gets himself flustered but truly doesn’t want to throw his rider into the dirt. While I HAVE long lined him and ground driven him…it does seem to bring back some PTSD w his past and he does get much more “amped up”. If you doubt he’s a Dutch Harness Horse…just hook him up and you’ll see it. ? I really quite like this guy…my riders have been on him, my husband can ride him walk/trot, he has a current quarter leader that’s been enjoying spending time w him and he has a LOT of potential. Zeke is barefoot w super tough feet, turns out w others but is the boss (very respectful herd leader mind you…I utilize him to reset some of my smaller herds if I have some trouble makers and it works every time.), respects electric, was finally understanding hosing off before the cold and is good inside at night behind just a stall chain or 24/7 turnout (which he prefer!). Easy keeper for his size now that he’s healthy and gained his weight back. Good for the farrier (can tell he was done in stocks so it took all of 20 mins to fix that the first day he arrived) and is lovely for the vet. Zeke DOES have ugly hind legs, there are photos in his album on my personal profile. They could be way worse of course and he is sound on them but…Amish road horses don’t exactly have it easy so his hinds show some good bumps/bruises along the way. They don’t stock up, no heat, no soundness issues whatsoever so if you can get past them not being perfect…you’re golden. Zeke does have some mental hang ups w straight tying. He will straight tie but has moments of feeling stuck and will break off. He just needs to learn to move forward into the pressure when he gets nervous, which is something we’re working on. This is obviously something that will come along w time. He cross ties well in the grooming/farrier stall and is pretty good in the aisle as well. He will bridle fine (my advanced beginner husband and riders do just fine w him) but won’t just drop and snag the bit - yet! He definitely seems to be happy in a hackamore (many of my horses go in hacks) as he seems to have a little thing about his nose/mouth that I haven’t totally sorted out yet. Most definitely some sort of hang up from his past life. (Yes, his teeth have been recently floated) We haven’t loaded him since bringing him home but he loaded up and hauled perfectly when we did. He will continue to be worked so he can show us what he can do and will not be rushed out the door. 3 ?
