Juan is the type of horse I wish I had a barn full of in every size and color! Juan has spent the majority of his life as a ranch horse in south Texas. He’s seen more rough country and cows than most people will in their life. He rides out alone or with a group. He will leave the group without a fuss. He is excellent on the trails. Up and down banks, crosses water, steps over ditches, goes in deep pools of water, and handles more technical trails with ease.... (read more) He has also been ridden on the roads and is traffic safe. Juan walks, jogs, and lopes nicely. However, being a ranch horse his whole life, and not much arena work, he picks up his left lead every time. We are working on the right lead, but it isn’t consistent yet. He is obviously comfortable around cows. He will gather, ride through, and sort with ease. I trust him to take my 2 year old kiddos with me on trail rides. He is quiet and dependable. Also trail ridden and ridden around the barn by a 37 week pregnant lady and ridden by her again first postpartum.
Juan stands well for the farrier. Has nice barn manners and gets along well in a mixed herd of mares and geldings. Loads and unloads easily. He stands well for mounting.
Now for the negative - he will sometimes pull back when tied. We do tie him, but are conscientious if there is a lot of commotion around to not have him tied hard or leave him unattended for long periods of time while tied. He does stand ground tied well!
