"Winchester," affectionately known as "Winnie" around the barn, is a gelding on which you can always feel safe and secure. This APHA registered, 2010 model stands a very stout 14.1HH (riders in the video range from 5'7"-6'2"—he has a wide stature). These steady-eddie type of geldings for sale are rare and truly worth their weight in gold. With Delta Flyer and Peppy San Badger right on his papers, he has an excellent pedigree and a great brain.... Winnie can be enjoyed by riders of all ages and abilities. He is never spooky, extremely uncomplicated, and simple to handle. Overall, he is a great insurance policy to keep around in the barn. Personally, I would love to keep him around for my beginner family members and novice husband to ride. We recently came back from a weekend of trail riding and camping 6 hours away in West TX, and he did not miss a beat. He hauled fantastically, settled into his pen, and was reliable all weekend long. Originally brought for my novice husband to ride, I ended up needing a super smooth, safe, and easy-to-mount/dismount horse due to carrying around $5k worth of my photography/videography gear. Winnie carried my precious cargo just as safely as he did me. He willingly completed every task without question, crossing each creek quietly and going down every embankment with confidence. He always found his footing and was sure-footed on the rocky terrain (barefoot!). He will go out alone or in a group—leading the pack or falling far behind (he doesn't mind). If you lack confidence on the trails, he will take care of you 100%, never startling or spooking. This guy is as "bombproof" as they come—no bucking, rearing, bolting, kicking, cribbing, pacing, etc. He stands tied, is easy for the farrier, loads/unloads, has good ground manners, and can be handled and ridden by young kids too. I cannot pinpoint a single vice on this boy.
Winnie loves to be on a loose rein, keeping his head level with his withers as he calmly moves along at the speed you ask. You can easily sit back and enjoy the scenery with his joy-stick handle. We encountered cattle, drones, ATVs, deer, and other wildlife on the trails—all of which he paid no mind to. Winnie carries the flag, can be ridden in traffic, and isn't bothered by flapping tarps. From catching him in the pasture to loading up, tacking up, and hitting the trails, this gelding is one of the best I have ever had, and I wish we could keep him around. I can turn him out with hormonal mares, other aggressive geldings, cattle, etc., and he keeps the peace, ignoring all the goofy shenanigans the mares try to throw his way. Winnie is personable on the ground, wanting to be sweet and "in your pocket," and is just about as "idiot-proof" as they come.
Besides his fantastic temperament, my favorite trait about this boy is his smoothness—he has a lovely pitter-patter jog and a comfortable lope that you can ride all day long without getting sore. Winnie has basic maneuvers such as a turnaround, soft back-up, and knowledge of leads. He could easily be shown at open/local ranch events without any issues. Formerly, this gelding was an elderly man's fence-checking and cattle-counting horse, so he knows this job well. On the 4th of July weekend we had out 3 young boys, ages 3-8 who had NEVER ridden a horse before. Winnie proved to be kind, patient, and extremely gentle with these boys! He adjusted to each boys comfort level, and went their desired speed. The boys rode him double and unassisted on our obstacle course & in the arena. Winnie went anywhere the boys wanted to go – giving them confidence to learn safely! Winnie is currently barefoot with excellent feet. He has a current coggins, recent dental on file, been adjusted by the chiropractor (like all my horses receive). We have had this gelding for 5 months and can tell you everything you want to know. APHA papers/transfer in hand. Winnie sells 100% sound with no lameness/health problems. We have gone over him with a fine-tooth comb – and know he is going to be a great asset in someone’s family. I would be happy to assist in the coordination of shipping to any buyer’s state. Please feel free to reach out to Lily with any questions!
