Helmers Run is a 16.3 and a half 6yo TB mare by Micromanage (Medaglia D'Oro).
Helmer got here a few weeks ago and was extremely thin with an awful coat/skin funk. I thought she was going to need at least a month of r&r before she'd be able to get going but she put on weight and shinned up in an astonishing amount of time. Within 2 weeks of being here she looks like a completely different horse. She's packed on pounds like I can't believe.... (read more) She's had her feet and teeth done, been de wormed and is now looking like the model of a horse she's supposed to & feeling good in her body.
Helmer is just pretty. There's no other way to say it. When I was riding her today (on 4 hours of sleep after getting up at 3am to be at Plantation with Sunshine this morning, so probably not the best version of myself lol) I could tell she must be gorgeous to be looking at from the ground. She gives a great feel. Her neck is set on just right and makes a lovely shape very naturally. I have her in the duo to encourage her to come take a feel and push up into the connection. She has a fun floaty trot and an uphill canter. She's quite big but gives a light on her feet feel. She was lightly restarted by her previous owner and I often find this means there's going to be some fixing involved. When I did her first ride she had little to no understanding of the connection and was sure she wanted nothing to do with it lol She was avoiding taking a feel by throwing her shoulders around and trying to convince me that even though she's a 6yo and ran 31x she actually could not steer. She's a smart mare and figured it out quickly. I'm really proud of her for figuring it all out so quickly. Horses never cease to amaze me how quick to forgive and open to trying they can be.
Helmer has no vices or injuries. She's been great turned out with another mare. She's quiet in a stall. She stands nicely on crossties and for all of the grooming activities.

Helmer is coming along nicely so she popped over her first poles and jumps yesterday. I like to try and keep it short and sweet for their first few jump sessions. I want them to end feeling like they're the champion and that was fun. I usually don't think their form and footwork is especially great at first. That's something that generally comes with strength and practice, however, I have to say that Helmer really impressed me with her natural instinct to sort out her feet and jump in a lovely shape. She showed a super brain and willingness as well as talent over fences. I want to let this soak up in her brain for a few days and then I'll get her doing more of a course type school in the next week or so.
