Merryn would be classed as a Social Horse: she will thrive in a one-on-one partnership.... (read more) Your requests need to be clear and fair and firmly backed up. Reward compliance verbally and with rubs/pats generously. Talk to her in a confident tone to reassure her in new environments.
To keep her focus on you apply half halts liberally. Allow her to investigate her surroundings to satisfy her curiosity. Social horses are very concerned with who is around, etc. Keep things easy to understand giving one new command at a time and allowing her to connect with it well. Then soften and reward compliance as soon as she submits to keep it fun for her.
I started her training fall of 2017, as a 3 yr old. She was a quick and compliant student, we did a good amount of trail riding. Then she went out to pasture for the next couple years with only a few trail rides in the summer.
July & August 2020 she is back in training with more focus on arena work. She still needs to learn to relax and collect in canter.
She is a lovely kind beautiful Mare. Of course she loads fine into a trailer and is good for the farrier. She is current on her shots (Equivax and Rabies) and has a negative Coggins dated 4/27/2020.
Small Hobby Farm owner. Showing, training, selling a couple Friesian cross horses.
