Doxa is a 5 year old, very lightly raced dark bay mare. She stands about 15.1 hands high. She raced only 5 times in 2018 and somehow ended up in the care of an exercise rider. While he hoped to be able to continue running her, finances forced him to make the decision to retire her through the Beyond the Wire program in Maryland. Doxa arrived just before Christmas in December, 2018. She was initially evaluated by our veterinarian on January 2, 2019 and they found a clean legged horse. She was however suspected to have a slight neurological deficit and she was tested (through spinal tap) and treated for EPM. After completing two months of treatment she has been found to be asymptomatic and ready to start into work! We did a final spinal tap to do our due diligence and hope to have the results back soon.

Meanwhile, Doxa is now available for adoption to someone willing to get her back into work and take a chance on her. As soon as we’re able we’ll begin her retraining here, but our main rider is recovering from an injury so it may take a little time. Doxa is actually a lovely little mover and we hope will take to getting back into work with style.

After the Races

A rehabbing and rehoming facility for retired Thoroughbred race horses, here at After the Races we have several nice OTTBs in need of great homes. Adoption fees are low and these horses are capable of going on to any discipline. Right now we have horses who would make fantastic trail or lesson mounts as well as those who could go on to high level showing. Many great projects. Please consider adopting today!
