Col.Freckles 11yr is a big stout leopard Appy with a tail! He is best suited as a trail horse. He has no desire to get up and go fast. Nice trail rides with a group or on his own is his passion. He has been known to be a bit pushy on the ground. Once you establish your dominance and that you are the leader he is fine.
His Pros are his size 15.2H, and he is stout so if you are a big person he will be your man. He has great color and a tail and that can be unusual for an appy.... (read more) He is a gelding and has been pasture turnout with mares and there are no issues. He has enormous hooves, he is 100% sound and vet checks welcome at buyers expense. He is excellent tied to the trailer and will stand very patiently. He is very easy to saddle and rides western in a dog bone working cow horse bit, but I imagine anything with a curb strap will work on him. He will need a wide western saddle to fit his back so keep that in mind if you already have tack. He has been exposed to parades (not in them just watching) He has been around the mounted shooters at practice although never had one of those guns shot off of his back. He truly enjoys long walks, he is fine around cars but can get nervous if a quad runs up behind him. If he sees the quad he is fine its just when they come up loud and fast behind him that you can feel him suck his butt down but he did not offer to buck or bolt.
His Cons he can be pushy on the ground so if you are not a seasoned horse person he will quickly decide he is the boss of you. He does not like his hind feet messed with, although the same farrier has been working with him for 6 mos. now and we can touch and lift the back feet to have them trimmed. That being said he is barefoot on the hinds. But again he has amazing big strong hooves so that is not an issue for him. Col Freckles gets along with both men and woman. He likes to be turned out and not penned up probably because of his size he needs to move around. So if you are taking lessons with someone he will be fine for a novice but a novice will need to have an experienced seasoned rider to help them out now ant then. I have some videos and I will get them up on youtube and can provide a link when I do. He can be seen in Vail AZ on weekends. He is not an aggressive horse, he is very passive in a herd. He will make you a wonderful friend he is very loving and always wants to know what you are doing. I truly believe that you could trick train this horse easily because he is so curious. Reason for selling is we have too many and recently picked up a yearling so we need to work on them.
