Gunner is an 12 yr old gaited gelding. He is a Tennessee Walker/Missouri Foxtrotter-cross; he has BOTH types of gaits! Just bump his bit to shift gears.
Gunner has been all over the place - several rides up around Dallas, Austin, Houston, and San Antonio areas. He does excellent in very large groups, or riding by yourself. We have camped out with him - he high-ties and travels very well. Nothing bothers him when camping, he eats and drinks anywhere, has never kicked at others on trails, and enjoys going fast or slow.... (read more) Just an all around wonderful guy.
I have put beginners on him, both on the trail and in the arena. My husband is an advanced beginner and they get along just fine on the road and in public rides. Gunner has been a part of the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer ride and a Halloween ride, in which he got dressed up for costume. He was spray painted (with colored hairspray), had decorative items on him, and even wore a pirate hat! He was around other costumes and brightly colored decoratons - none of it bothered him, and none of the decked out horses were "monsters". He goes through water, will swim, jumps a little (though not his talent), and is a fun trail horse. If you are an advanced rider, you can ride him out alone. He isn't barn sour and rides alone very well. He can be stubborn to leave another horse or group, but a firm rider can get him moving with no trouble.
Gunner leads, loads very well, easy to catch (he turns to face you, inviting you into his space), walks /leads with the golf cart, bathes, etc. I have never tried clippers on him - I don't clip. He neck reins very well, and rides bareback, too. I rode him for 2 hrs bareback and kept pace with 3 barrel QHs in conditioning training on a sandy trail - he was a GEM! Kept his gait, and his canter is just lovely. He has also been around cows, and he'll chase them if you ask. Been there, done that kinda guy.
Gunner is a VERY easy keeper - no grain needed, just access to hay/grass. I'd give a scoop a couple times a week during the winter months and he never lost weight. He might be TOO easy if you have really lush pastures; may need to limit him. He has excellent feet, doesn't need shoes (unless you plan to ride a lot of concrete or really rocky areas - then I'd do fronts). He gaits pretty naturally, but it's up to you to tell him if you want a Tennessee Walker running walk, or the Fox Trot. Both are lovely - he can rack too, if you really get him going and hyped up.
This guy is gorgeous to boot, and THICK. He can easily carry heavier riders, and stands quietly to be mounted, tacked, etc. NOT A KIDS HORSE. I've never put a child on him, so even though beginner adults have been on him, he has not been around any kids to my knowledge. I refuse to sell or list him as a kid horse since I have no experience with him in that area. I don't think he would be simply for energy level and he might not respect little leople.
He's everything most gaited people want - he's flashy and gorgeous, well gaited, trail saavy, easy to handle, easy keeper, and well behaved. He also likes to be "snorty", but it's all talk - he just snorts at things, doesn't mean anything or do anything.
Gunner seems to prefer women, and I'd say needs a confidant firm rider for his main rider. Like I mentioned before, I have put beginner and intermediate riders on him, and he does fine in the arena or a small, calm group ride. He can feel nervousness and will mirror his rider.
