I have a kiger mustang mare for sale named Montana. She's 13 yrs old and 14.2 hand high. Her mother was a wild capture in foal but she was born in captivity so she does not have the brand but she's genetically strait off the plains. She was raised most of her life as a trail horse in Alaska but has spent the last two years of her life working as a therapy horse for handicapped children.... (read more) She's even got her picture in the newspaper of her doing her therapy work. Montana has only ever had 2 owners so there's no "baggage" from poor treatment or hard feelings towards people. She has NO aggression issues and has never offered to bite, buck, rear, or kick. She's not pushy, is very respectful of your space, is not hard to catch, and is an easy keeper.
She loads, bathes, ties without pulling or pawing, stands for the farrier, lunges on a lead or from behind double reined, and rides english and western.
I've started her in english for the past few weeks and she takes to it very nicely. (please contact for pictures) Her movement has a notable spanish influence so she naturally has a nice head set and good reach. She would make a fantastic hunter/jumper prospect. I have never had her refuse a single jump be it in the arena setting or on the trail. Her steering is great, her upward/downward transitions are okay, she needs to build the muscle to properly frame up but she's great about keeping a consistent pace.
On trails, she has always done very well. She'll ride in front, middle, or behind and she's not spooky at all if there's another horse with her. She is willing to ride out by herself but she's a little nervous when she's alone in new places. Once she's been ridden there more than 3 times, she's totally at ease. I've ridden this horse extensively and she's only ever spooked a few times and it was never anything that came close to unseating me, just a jump/flich. I was riding her in the woods yesterday and a dog came charging out of the underbrush, barking and snapping at her tail and she didn't even speed up, so she' s got a very level head on her. I ride her in a bitless bridle without any problems and the heaviest bit she's ever had is the eggbutt snaffle you see in the picture. She's not afraid of ditches, traffic, dogs, horns, obstacles, or woods. She is not thrilled about water but will cross easily enough if another horse leads or if her footing is solid but she doesn't like deep mud/swampy places,.
I think she definitely qualifies as beginner safe. She's a very gentle natured horse. I can lead her around the yard with just my hand under her chin, no halter needed. Her second owner got her as a first horse for his 13 yr old son and the ONLY reason that she is being sold is because he's now over six ft tall and his legs are about to drag the ground when he rides her. I've also put 5 yr olds on her by themselves and taught them how to ride but that was in an enclosed area that she was very familiar with. I'm hesitant to advocate any multi-hundred pound prey animal as "child safe" so that will have to be your call.
If you have any questions about her at all, please don't hesitate to call anytime and please contact for more pictures. I have a bunch of them. Thank you so much and have a great day. :) 843-seven29-two903. I have really patchy reception so feel free to call more than once if I don't answer the first time.
