What is a Foundation Bred Horse?

Foundation bred horses are those that can be traced back to the start of their respective breeds. Sometimes that means just a handful of stallions and mares that form the core of the breed. The term was originally used for Quarter Horses, but can also refer to Arabians, Appaloosas and Morgans.
