(read more) If you ride or know someone who rides NATRC Region 5 the names Arrow's Alabama Express (Honeybun) or Arrow's Saltwater Taffy (Taffy) would be as well known. Ranch-bred horses are known for lots of bottom/heart with a naturally smooth gait.

It was a strange year and we have closed our horse program, both here and in town. I do not plan to bring any more horses home from Colorado to train at this time. There are plenty of fine young horses available at the ranch in Eastern Colorado, if you are a trainer or know a trainer this is something to look into.

We really only teach horses a few things, stop (most important!), go, left, right,...plus a few tricks. "Stand" is an extension of "stop". Tricks include come when called, using a shoeing stand and sitting stool (I have health issues that require very quiet horses), parking out, picking me up from mounting block as well as improvised mounting blocks such as tailgates or fallen logs (health issues again) Early training consists of practicing in the barn to carry a saddle, to get feet handled, lead, load, and tie.

Horsemanship is the understanding of and unity with the horse. The rider is the brains and the horse is the brawn, working in harmony. We strive to do everything better together. This understanding and communication make the time with our horses both safer and more fun. We teach the basics of cooperation and safety first, then we refine, polish, and grow new skills (stop, go, left, right). There should be no punishment in horse training. Instead, we use correction, repetition, and a playful attitude. Trust, authority, and friendship are essential. We love our horses and want our horses to love us back. But the reality is that without proper training horses are dangerous and no fun. Gaining trust is not enough. It takes both trust and training to make a safe dependable horse. It isn’t what we do but how we do it that makes us different.
