Currently adjusted to fit wide Morgan; tree can be adjusted by certified Schleese saddle-fitters to fit any width/any shape horse.
Panel was manufactured with Schleese’s ¾ Shoulder Relief Panel (see description below), and then re-built after manufacture to include Wedge Relief (see description below) at rear, making this the perfect saddle for short-backed, baroque breeds– Morgan, Andalusian, Lusitano, short-backed Friesians– and those with large shoulders.... Shoulder-relief cutout panel (see photo) frees the scapula to swing backward without interference as the horse’s front leg strides forward.
Wedge-relief at rear of panel sweeps up under the cantle to relieve pressure in the lumbar region. Note that the saddle is sitting level in the photographs– the upsweep of the panel at the cantle end is NOT an optical illusion; it does curve up off the horse’s back by design!
These two features allow this saddle to fit my short-backed Morgan. This is the saddle that put us back in the riding game; before finding this Schleese, I had stopped riding and honestly thought I would have a driving-only Morgan due to my inability to find a short-enough saddle for his back.
Buffalo leather upgrade, a soft, grippy leather surface.
Evaluated in February 2013 by Schleese at $3500 fair market value. (See photo)
Completely re-flocked in September 2013.
Selling because I bit the bullet and ordered a new custom Schleese Merci for him. (See Schleese website.) While this saddle has been amazing for him, I personally prefer a flat/shallow seat jumping saddle for me, and thus the new Merci!
Selling price includes 28†Schleese girth, purchased new in February 2013 for $250, in very good to excellent condition.
In the fall of 2012, I had pretty much given up using my young Morgan as a saddle horse; he was so difficult to fit– any saddle wide enough for his broad back was far too long and caused him pain, which manifested in fussing during tacking up, pinning his ears, and hollowing his back in an attempt to get away from the saddle that hurt. Eventually, he just shut down and refused to move forward at all. Until we found this Schleese, with exactly these features, I was seriously considering giving up riding for driving. This saddle, with these features designed specifically for the short-coupled horse, turned our life together around. Immediately upon placing it on his back, even before it was fitted to him by Schleese, he was relaxed, comfortable, and again willing to go and do his thing. We have never looked back. I cannot recommend Schleese saddles, or their fitters, highly enough– this is the saddle every horse deserves.
