Company / Farm: Terri Cage Photography - Horse lover! Interested in many diciplines, knowledgeable about many, expert in a few, pro in none. Love to photograph ALL!
I grew up with photography being very important in our family. We even had our own darkroom. I was more into drawing, painting, and being a horse-crazy young girl; horses where my favorite subjects. Needing images of horses to draw, I asked my father to teach me photography. Photography made me a much better at observing horse's behavior, movements and expressions. I would sit for hours watching horses and learning how they interact with each other and with humans. Over time I was photographing more and drawing less until I no longer drew. But having a background in art has greatly helped in understanding color, composition, and light.
Photographing horses and their humans to show the bond they share is among my favorite subjects. It can also be the most challenging. I have seen many images of horses and humans that are beautiful photographs, but the focus of posing is all on the human and the horse looks dull, distorted, or unhappy. Being a horse owner, I know that having the horse look good is just as important, if not more important than the owner looking good. Having the ears up is key! Ears down versus ears up is equal to a frown to a smile. Horses are an important part of those who ask for images taken of them together, so a horse must not be treated as an accessory, but another family member and showing their bond in photographs is essential. I always ask questions about the horse and love to listen to the stories the owner tells. I enjoy watching their eyes light up as I stir up fond memories, which always helps display the bond.
