Jessica Pickering sat on a horse before she was even a year old and instantly reached down, grabbed mane and laughed. That was the start of a lifelong passion. She started western riding lessons at a young age but as soon as she sat in an English saddle at Coventry Farms in Littleton, Colorado she was at home. Within two years of riding in one of Colorado's top warmblood breeding and show barns she was entering the show ring herself. Within a few years she was winning back to back Show Champions in the Colorado Hunter Jumper Association shows around the state. She continued her training under local trainers and soon began riding American Thoroughbreds, planting the seeds for her future. By nineteen years of age she was an assistant trainer; teaching lessons and learning how to retrain off-the-track thoroughbreds. Jessica continued assisting for several local trainers until 2010 when she started Pickering Equestrian. For the past four years she has focused on increasing her knowledge of the thoroughbred and their responses to classical riding. She still lessons and clinics with top trainers such at Joanne Hart, Ken Hart, Nicole Thüngen(German Dressage Master), Ken McGarth (USDF Gold Medalist), and several more top experts. In 2013 Jessica became part of the CANTER Colorado team where she retrains the thoroughbreds they rehabilitate and re-home. Jessica is skilled in training horses of all breeds but has the rare patience and skill to train the sensitivity, high energy, and keen mind of thoroughbreds.
Jessica has a very unique way of training horses and all the thoroughbreds that cross her path have the choice to choose their carriers after track life. "Not all thoroughbreds are going to be great jumpers or top class dressage horses" Jessica says, "some just want to take care of someone, or be a pleasure horse." Jessica has the talent to see when a thoroughbred wants to give you their all and when it is time to try something new. She also can see the basic physical or mental limitations that many thoroughbreds may have that could keep them from being successful in different carriers. She also has the eye to find potential in horses that many may pass by, she can find the true diamonds in the rough. She is a full believer in what Ken Hart says, "'Thoroughbreds already have the agility for the big jumpers, all that's left is to create the mind for it." Jessica's passion is giving these majestic race horses a second chance at new carriers after their track life.
