First of all I would like to say that contrary to belief, "SHETLANDS ARE NOT BAD AND THEY ARE NOT MEAN!!" Most of them do not like "big people" but the majority LOVE KIDS! Reason??? Adults, just like most horses, are bigger than they are which immediately makes them defensive. They are not like Miniatures...Miniatures are seldom found pastured with anything more than other miniatures and people are seldom abusive to them so Minis have no idea they are small. Shetlands on the other hand are always found pastured with big horses where they are forced to fight to eat and drink and constantly bullied, and when it comes to people they are seldom treated any different than a big horse that along with us being bigger than them causes them to be defensive which in return causes us to handle them rough, they fight us and of course loose which ends up making them mean. Put them in a suitable environment where they do not have to fight for everything and treat them like we do miniatures and you will find out just how precious they are! No one should have the right to lay a rough hand on a Shetland unless they kick, bite or paw...once you do for any reason other than one of the three, they end up living up to their reputation. I take alot of time with the Shetlands I sell and I am pretty picky when it comes time to sell them so if you are planning to pasture them with several big horses and even one of them is aggresive...don't bother calling. If you have a place for them where they can feel special and you want them for a kid who will love them, I would love to talk to you!
L.A is a really nice three year old Gelding with a super nice build and unusual color. You will love his white mane and tail!!! He's easy to catch, load, handle, haul, stands for farrier, leads, stands tied, 100% sound with no past or present health or soundness issues, grooms easy, loves treats and loves smaller kids even more! He's been saddled a few times with no problem and should be no problem to break. Will make some kid a prefect best friend for many years to come!
