Elgar is a six year old Canadian Warmblood gelding with an almost exclusive Hanoverian pedigree. Started late in his three year old year, Elgar excelled in the four-year old young horse classes at Rocky Mountain Show Jumping - scoring a 91 and winning his second one! He has also competed for two show seasons at lower level eventing. This past year, he was only out once, as his owner has grown busier and busier. She has sadly decided to sell him because she couldn't commit the time that he needed.... (read more)
Elgar has three lovely gaits; a naturally balanced canter in which his lead changes have been natural. He has spent the last year focusing almost exclusively on dressage. He leg yields, has schooled shoulder-in, haunches-in, lengthen stride in trot and canter, and has started counter-canter work and half-pass. Both his upwards and downwards transitions are becoming smooth, steady and balanced.
He has schooled up to about 1.15m, shown to 0.9m. He has tons of scope and ability to move up through the levels in the right program, or he is happy just doing the smaller stuff. He is compact and able to make the roll-backs and tighter turns easily.
Elgar would do very well in any discipline his rider wants to focus on. He'd be a great derby prospect, jumper or event horse in a regular program. He has been ridden by his amateur owner but has always been in a program or lessons. He could be a junior horse too, although there should be trainer involvement for both an amateur or junior. How much involvement would depend, naturally, on the skill level and confidence of the rider.
Elgar is by the stallion Excalibur. Excalibur is consistently producing offspring with a fantastic canter, and great jump. He is by the famous Escudo I, Hanoverian of the Year in 2009. Escudo has been in the top ranked sires for jumping horses in the world for a number of years. Excalibur's dam has the impressive Furioso II line. Furioso II, an Oldenburg, is considered to be one of the most influential sires in sport horse history, having many offspring excelling in show jumping to the Olympic level. On the bottom side, Elgar is out of a beautiful, elegant Arkansas daughter, Andante. Arkansas, a registered Hanoverian, stood at the state stud in Celle, Germany, before being imported to Canada as a foundation stallion for the Canadian Warmblood Horse Breeders' Association.
