Reata (as we call her) is a registered quarter horse born May 2000. She was broke the Buck Branaman way by a Canadian friend who was mentored by Buck. He raised her from a colt, broke her and trained her. I have ranch roped off her in a few competitions but she would make a better recreational team penning or reigning horse. She has over 500 hours in the mountains and many more at our ranch.
This is no anchorage pet. I lived on a ranch in Longview, Alberta. Reata was broke by an ethical and extremely handy ranch hand that breaks and ropes for a living. She stands for the Ferrier (I can supply a referral) loads perfectly, opens and closes gates, stands if you ask her for as long as you ask her. She settles down from a gallop quickly and is relatively cowy. She will usually like to be the lead mare in a herd and can be a little bossy with other horses but drops it all when she�s on the job.
I have always used a snaffle bit; she neck reins like a dream and responds perfectly to leg pressure. She transitions well turns well and stops well in the arena but has not been in an arena in a long time. I predominately used her as a ranch and mountain horse she will climb all day long and cross streams above the stirrups without hesitation. I have even swam with her albeit by accident. She has small feet but quite seriously places them better than any horse I have ever ridden. We do big 15 hour days in the mountains and she keeps up with our bulldog quarter horses but I feel guilty given her size. She�s strong but slight about 15-2 but don�t quote me.
About two years ago I put a saddle on her for about 3 months that pinched her when I dallied a cow and she bucked a few times before I figured it out. She is fine now but it is a trick in her repertoire that she can fall back on when motivated. So I recommend a rider who knows what they are doing. If I haven�t ridden her in a couple of weeks I will keep my eye on her for the first 10 minutes or so till she is warmed up. An experienced rider will notice she is tight and will see it coming, a couple quick turns and she�s thinking about something else. She will go 10 months without a hop but I�m picky I guess. it is something any horse is capable of but I feel compelled to mention it.
She is a sweetheart and will make a fantastic companion for a medium experienced rider who rides regularly, not once every couple of months. I have more photos of her as well as some short video I can email. I also have her papers scanned to email as well. Reata is currently living with us in Calgary Alberta Canada but we would be happy to bring her to you if you live in the Seattle area as we have friends we can visit. Asking 4900 obo. Update: had her out this past weekend (May 2008) for her first mountain rides this year and she was flawless! A total treat to ride!
