Donia is sweet mare.
Quiet & easy to handle.
Donia has a very smooth gait & is fun to ride.
She is a nice gaited horse for group trail rides unlike most gaited horses because she will slow it down to match the other horses walk or if you get board you can kick her up a notch to be smooth as glass.
She is a easy on the eyes to look at & just has a kindness about her.
Donia ties, loads, hauls, clips, & bathes.
History of the Kentucky Gaited horse :
*This article below about the Kentucky horse was featured in the Horse Illustrated issue for March 2011*
The Kentucky Mountain saddle horse shares a close ancestry with that of the Mountain pleasure horse. The breed was developed in the Appalachain Mountains in the 1800's for riding and farm work.
In 1989, Kentuckian Robert Robinson, Jr., started the Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse Association (KMSHA) to help preserve the breed's bloodlines.
Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horses can be of any color & may have white on their face & legs, although the white must be limited. The KMSHA classifies horses into two height categories: Class B horses can't be shorter that 11 hands, & class A horses must be 13.3 hands or taller.
Foals born from KMSHA registered sires & dams may be temporarily registered from birth, but to be permenently registered, they must demonstrate desired under saddle characteristics at 2 years of age or older. Horse are then approved by association examiners to qualify for KMSHA registration, a horse must show a gentle & willing disposition & demonstrate evidence of a natural, smooth & even 4 beat gait under saddle. Like other mountain horse breeds, the Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse is versatile & capable of a variety of functions, with trail riding being the breeds most popular use.
The KMSHA sponsors a trail club, which rewards memebers for the amount of time they spend riding their horses on the trail. The breed has also been successfully competing in endurance.
The various Mountain horse breeds, despite their differences, has some important characteristics in common. All are hardy, & have willing dispositions, smooth gaits, & a talent for the trail. It's no wonder the appeal of these breeds is spreading well beyond southern birth place.
