Let's start off by saying that Sierra is not going to win any beauty contests. When we first met her, we were unprepared for her lack of physical beauty. However, Sierra's appeal is her personality and disposition. Turns out, her beauty is on the inside, and there's alot of it!!
She is a 12yr old Percheron/Morgan cross that got the head and brains of the Percheron side and the size and athleticism of the Morgan side. She's a 15.1h, dark brown mare with the sweetest personality and the kindest eyes.... (read more) What a sweetheart!!
Sierra has great ground manners; she leads, loads, ties, stands for bathing, grooming, fly spray, and the farrier, and understands the concept of personal space. She's extremely easy to handle, she's easy to catch. She's an easy keeper, and she is a no-drama mare in the pasture.
She stands for tacking up and mounting, and won't move out til you ask her to. She has a smooth ground-eating walk, power steering and brakes, and her back up works too. Her trot is easy and the transition is good. Sierra's only vice, and this is something we are teaching her, is that she has alot of "go". Her previous owner only ever got on her and ran her so she thinks that this is what she's supposed to do. We are working on slowing her down. She is extremely fun to ride!! She would not be an appropriate mount for a beginner, but certainly a calm strong intermediate rider would have a blast with her!!
Now with that being said, she is very controllable even as she tries to trot off. It takes about 5 minutes of whoaing her down and she's fine after that. She is super responsive to leg cues however, and thinks that a touch to the sides means "go", so we don't use alot of leg with her. She's very light in the mouth and could very easily learn to neck rein. She's almost doing it now!
Sierra is incredibly smart and even-tempered. She's easy-going, willing, sassy, sane, safe, curious, not spooky, friendly, and just a joy to be around. The more you get to know her, the prettier she gets... We now think she's beautiful inside and out... Isn't that the way it should be?
