It is rated to trim 4000 head. It comes complete with the sharpener and some accessory heads. It is very easy to use and can be held in one hand while the other stabilizes the foot. With leather chaps, you can work with the foot between your knees.
Most of my clients report that they trim 3 to 4 horses in the same amount of time it use to take them to trim 1. Less work for you, less standing for the horse. Using it with a Hoof Jack is also very helpful. One client reported that it took him 7 minutes to trim 4 feet, the first time he used the Merlin.
It actually cuts away the hoof, not with heat as an abrasive grinder. The only time I use a hoof knife is to remove loose frog. The trimmer takes down the bars, sole and hoof wall with ease. You can start with talking off the thickness of an egg shell and go from there.
