"Blackjack" is a 16.1-2hh black Tennessee Walking Horse gelding looking for a new home. We have used Black in our trail riding and riding lesson program mainly for riders who are new beginners and who have little or no riding experience. He is traffic safe, crosses over any bridge, ditch, water etc. He has never refused an obstacle on the trail. Has tons of experience quietly trail riding all over NJ and PA with experienced riders as well as beginners!... (read more) Kids have trail ridden him as well as non-horsey husbands! He has been to several hunter paces too. He is seventeen years old and is also registered (I have his papers). No problems loading (I have stock trailer). He is best suited for an owner who is a confident advanced beginner even though new beginners can ride him... he has great ground manners but occasionally needs to be reminded to listen. He needs someone who wont be afraid to tell him to cut the crap should he not stand still for mounting or grooming. Black learned to scare his previous owners by acting like a brat. He knows better and usually a tap with a crop will get him to cut out any non sense. When he is not paying attention and steps on the back of your shoe because he is walking behind you, he needs someone to move his feet for a few mins (very easy I can show you) to regain his attention. If he forgets "whoa" means stop now and not in 20 seconds, Ill back him up a few steps to remind him. He doesn't do anything that bad other than - he just needs reminders every so often on how to act polite. If not dealt with, I could see he would take advantage of someone on the ground if they were scared. We are only looking to rehome Black for 2 reasons: first one is that he CANNOT have a heavy rider. He will get muscle fatigued and start shaking when an overweight rider is on him for too long. What weight exactly? He's definitely ok with someone who is 150 or under - not so sure what his exact limit is. The 2nd reason is that he requires a lot of leg to get going when leaving our farm to go to the trails. For the first ten or so minutes you really have to nag him to go - and its something that is hard to grasp for new riders especially when he needs a good kick to go! He is never lazy to leave when we trailer out or when we go to paces - obviously he knows the deal at our farm! Black get unlimited access to a round bale and just a quarter scoop of grain 2x a day. He rides in just a regular hackamore - we never use a bit anymore and he is A LOT happier with no bit in his mouth especially when a beginner is on him! He currently lives outside 24/7 with access to a shed. He does seem to have allergies so sometimes he will have a little runny nose and dry cough but its never hindered his eating or riding. He is barefoot and stands quietly for the farrier as well as the vet. Good hard feet. Happy to lead trail rides or happy to stay behind any horse at any speed. Has been ridden alone with no issues - will get a bit nervous and prancy (head tucks in, tail goes up) but never acted out in any other way. Low to mid in pecking order. Never has kicked out or bitten any person or horse. Never bucked or run away. I don't know if he could live in a barn - he was stalled up occasionally when he was at another farm and he would stall walk and scream often. He would act very nervous and the minute you got on him to ride, he was a gentleman. He was never stall up continuously, just some times so perhaps he couldn't handle the ever-changing stall/turn out schedule. He has been a great asset to our program and we hate to see him go! We are located in Flemington, NJ.
