“DIXIE TUFF STUFF” is a registered APHA mare. She was born April 6th, 2007. She stands approx 15.1hh and weighs about 1,100 lbs. Dixie is a very heavy built mare with correct conformation. She has a large hip and wide chest.
Dixie is very friendly and is easy to catch. She's the first one at the gait waiting for you. She has good ground manners and no problem leading.... (read more) She stands well for grooming, tacking up, farrier, shots, fly spray, etc. She will also stand there all day if you just want to pet on her and feed her treats. She is a fairly social horse and enjoys human attention.
She has been around cows (has been pastured with cows as well as used to check cows on), dogs, chickens, and most of your other typical farm animals.
This is not a beginners horse. Her size would more than likely be intimidating to a beginner and she could be pushy if a beginner let her get away with things. She is a big powerful mare who needs a job. In my opinion she is just too much horse for someone who is not experienced. If you are a beginner you can still call us and we might have a better fitting horse for you.
As most horses, Dixie tends to ride a little better and be more responsive after she has been warmed up for 10 or 15 minuets. She is very smart and is a quick learner. She has been taught to collect, put her head down and give to the bit, She will walk, trot, lope and back with her head down. She has excellent transitions. She has a quick stop and a fast reverse. She neck reins and direct reins. She does best with a light snaffle, a wonder bit (sliding gag) or just a rope halter. I have never ridden her in a hackamore but I think she would do fine with it as well. She has a nice quiet walk, a slow smooth trot (or a fast jerky one, whichever you ask her do) and a nice comfortable lope. She will also get up and go and has some speed if you ask her. She would rather walk than run but will jump right to a lope if you ask her.
Dixie has gobs of potential and will make someone an amazing ride. She is a nice roping or ranch horse prospect.
Out on the trails, Dixie is alert and pays attention well. She will go just about anywhere you point her without hesitating. She is content to ride as the lead horse or to bring up the rear. She has been ridden on miles of trails and will cross logs, ditches, creeks, or anything else you might find on the trail with no problem. She is very sane, level headed and non-spooky.
Dixie is currently barefoot and does well that way. However if she is going to be ridden on much rough or rocky terrain, I would put a set of shoes on her.
She loads and trailers fine. Has been hauled from PA, to GA.
Health records, veterinary inspection, current negative coggins, APHA registration papers (with signed transfer report) are included with purchase.
If you are looking for a big, sturdy, very athletic mare with lots of potential, who you can ride in the show ring, ranch, or just trails, Dixie is the horse for you.
